I once heard a story about two babies having a discussion in their Mother’s womb. The one said: We need to get out of here. It is becoming too small for both of us. It was good while it lasted but I think something better is waiting for us on the outside. I have a sense that a new beginning is just around the corner. The other baby replied: I don’t think so. This place is safe. It is warm, we are fed and secure. I don’t think there is anything positive on the outside. I feel that if we leave this place we will certainly die.
I spoke to a client the other day who was terrified of change and transition. Staying where she was, was the only thing that made her feel safe. The known was comfortable and she felt that she knew what to expect.
For some of us change is much harder than for others. The uncertainty of what is lying around the next corner and how it will affect our lives can be overwhelming.
The interesting thing about change however, is that it is the only constant in our lives. Change truly is the only thing we can be certain of. How full of fascinating intricacies life is. I think that we will all be off better once we except we cannot control everything. What if we could just lean into life and make choices based on our values and principles and choose to focus on what we want rather than what we fear?
If we start seeing life as a learning experience and a growth opportunity, negative events and traumatic experience just become part of the adventure and we start living life more freely. What we focus on becomes our reality and what we practice grows stronger.
I have seen how people overcome unsurmountable challenges simply because they chose to reframe their experiences as opportunities and gifts rather than struggles and punishment. I have also seen how some people could simply not get over setbacks that was small in comparison to what others experienced. They fall into a pit of self-pity and victimhood and choose to remain there because it feels safe and warm. The reality however is that these negative states or pits in our mindsets do not serve us at all. We have to get out of it or we will simply succumb to the negativity and self-destruct.
