We might think that people love leaders who make them feel good but paradoxically it is when the leaders that believe that they stand for the greatness and unlimited potential of their people and are able to have the uncomfortable conversation to unleash it that people remember as being pivotal in their lives.
People are resourceful and resilient when they have support to source their own solutions to the problems that they face. During these hyper stressful times there are those moments when we, our families or our employees become stuck in our thinking and where we see things a certain way and it is then very difficult for us to see other possibilities. Or there are times when we or our people resist changes and new ideas. We are not sure why and we can’t evaluate what’s right or wrong for us in a certain situation.
These times call for the uncomfortable conversations. It is in these moments when a leader-coach can ask a question or say something that truly makes us stop and think about how we think. It’s in these moments of uncertainty where we are most open to insights and learning.
We can see our blind spots and the source of resistance to change. We may not feel very comfortable in that moment, maybe even be embarrassed that we hadn’t noticed this before. We may be angry but we grow through this process of reflection. We grow in taking responsibility, commitment and accountability. We grow our emotional intelligence; social intelligence, self-awareness, self-regulation, creative problem solving skills. We grow in spiritual intelligence; wisdom and compassion. We grow in physical intelligence; regarding health and finances. And ultimately the uncomfortable conversations help us grow as leaders of our life, our family, our team, our community.
