Empowering Educators to Transform Classrooms

At Lusa Social Entrepreneurship Institute, we believe that the wellbeing of children begins with the wellbeing of the adults who care for them. The Regulated Teacher Programme is an innovative professional development initiative that equips educators with the knowledge, practical skills and self-awareness needed to create emotionally safe, connected and responsive learning environments.

Grounded in neuroscience, Polyvagal Theory, trauma-informed practice and social-emotional learning, the programme recognises that a regulated teacher is the foundation of a regulated classroom. Educators gain a deeper understanding of how stress and trauma affect the developing brain, behaviour and learning, while learning practical strategies to regulate their own nervous systems before supporting the emotional needs of their learners.

Through experiential learning, reflection and practical classroom tools, participants develop the confidence to recognise emotional states, respond with empathy rather than reactivity, strengthen co-regulation, and cultivate classrooms where children feel safe, connected and ready to learn. The programme equips educators with evidence-informed approaches that enhance learner engagement, emotional wellbeing, resilience and academic success.

During the reporting period, 51 educators from Afrikaans High School participated in The Regulated Teacher Programme, demonstrating the school’s commitment to investing in both educator wellbeing and learner outcomes.
